The Winter Weather course is designed to instruct controllers on current safety issues in Winter Weather. Controllers will learn about the challenges that winter weather poses on aviation, ATC, and the procedures used by ATC to promote safety for the flying public.The learner will look at topics, such as general aviation capabilities and aircraft characteristics in winter conditions; winter weather phenomenon including icing and VFR to IFR conditions; braking action; and ATC procedures used in winter weather conditions. The objectives are: Identify the effects that winter weather has on aviation, including general aviation capabilities and aircraft characteristics. Identify winter weather phenomenon including icing and VFR to IFR conditions. Identify ATC procedures used to increase safety in winter weather conditions. Define PIREPS and know when to solicit and disseminate them.
