The FAAs Technical Operations Navigations Programs Office Lighting Systems (AJM-3222) is preparing to install a low voltage flasher light system as part of the Approach Lighting System (ALS) at U.S. airports. The existing high voltage system in place has become obsolete, with the manufacturer no longer making the parts or equipment necessary to maintain the existing systems. At this time, airports have the option of installing the new low-voltage lighting system, rather than the FAA requiring they install the system. The FAA achieved this goal through two preemptive steps. First, though many airports have opted to install the new system, the FAA has a limited number of spares in stock for high-voltage system. Second, as the FAA removes the high-voltage system at airports, the agency places any viable parts from those systems into the depot as well, further augmenting the existing stock of spares. These actions help ensure ongoing support for the existing high-voltage systems even as many airports upgrade to the newly designed low-voltage system. The newly designed low-voltage system from the New Bedford Panoramex (NBP) Corporation requires replacement of three primary assemblies in the existing ALS systemsthe Flasher Light Assembly (FLA) which can be either elevated on semi-flush with the runway tarmac, the Individual Control Cabinet (ICC) for each FLA, and the Junction Box. Additionally, the wiring between the LV ICC and FLA is replaced when installing the new system. Once installed, the FAA can configure the FLA to operate in either the Dual Mode High Intensity Approach Lighting System with Sequenced Lights, Category II (ALSF-2)/Simplified Short Approach Lighting System with Runway Alignment Indicator Lights (SSALR), or in the Medium Approach Lighting Systems with Runway Alignment Indicator Lights (MALSR) mode. As the low-voltage system is new, there are no existing FAA courses available to the Air Transportation System Specialists (ATSSs) enabling them to l
