System safety is about aviation organizations managing safety in all aspects of their operations. This relies on an organizations ability to identify their safety hazards and control their safety risk. This course defines basic system safety terminology with an emphasis on understanding the difference between hazard and risk. The course then goes on to examine tools and techniques that are available to identify and manage organizational safety. These include: The safety attributes Safety Management System (SMS) Tools and techniques to counter human factors risk Risk-Based Decision Making (RBDM) performed by both the aviation organization and Flight Standards personnel, and Collaboration through data sharing between aviation organizations and with the FAAThese system safety concepts will provide the target audience (i.e., all Managers, ASIs, PIs, FLMs, ORAs and ASTs who interact with the aviation community) with job-competency knowledge of system safety and Safety Management Systems (SMS) and how they relate to the core concept of risk-based decision-making.Inspectors will be able to use this knowledge in their COS oversight of aviation organizations. COS oversight includes ongoing surveillance and certificate management activities.
