Those who are familiar with cyber crime technology are aware of the Linux-based Live CDs/DVDS. These optical discs boot the computer into a graphical user interface (GUI) from which the user can perform an array of actions such as creating a forensic image of storage media, navigating the file system to retrieve files from a corrupted operating system, or collecting information related to the system's hardware. But many people shy away from using these discs because of unfamiliarity with the Linux operating system. Enter Windows Forensic Edition (Win-FE). THis is a live forensic-oriented disc based on Windows XP, not Linux. The disc offers services similar to those found on the Linux-based option, and in an environment familiar to many investigators. This CyberCast will include hands-on demonstrations od how Windows FE is created, how additional software can be added to the disc, and how to use Windows FE to create a forensically sound image of a piece of media. | |||
