This course is designed to introduce students to reciprocating aircraft engine accident investigation techniques. Students will gain an understanding of the design, operating principles, construction features and common failure modes of various types of reciprocating engines to include: inline, radial, opposed and V-type reciprocating engines. The instruction will include hands-on reciprocating engine examination and data collection of various reciprocating engine systems and engine component failure modes, such as: Mechanical components and engine driven accessories. Fuel systems, including fuel pumps, filters, lines, manifolds, carburetors and fuel injectors as well as turbo/super chargers, and accessories. Electrical systems, including alternators, generators, sensors, ignition components and associated accessories. Engine-driven components including propeller/rotor / proximal gearbox and drivetrain examination of fixed and rotor-wing accident aircraft at the crash site.
